Today I’m under the weather. Got exposed to something over the weekend - whether it is just a cold or covid I have no idea - time (and a covid test) will tell. Today is a day where I laid around and slept and read most of the day. When I finally emerged from my cocoon I felt like writing. So here I am.
It’s been two weeks since we arrived in Galveston, TX. The first week the weather was miserable with a lot of rain and high winds. The winds were so bad my Chiefs flag blew away! Oh no! In the end all was saved as lost and found at the campground had it and I didn’t realize it until my new flag from Amazon arrived. So go Chiefs! Please enjoy the Golden Era of Chiefs football
.We are staying at a very nice RV resort called Stella Mare. Every pad site is concrete and rather spacious. We have one of the premium sites (makes up for the way less than premium site we stayed at in North Carolina for there months) with an excellent view and it’s a great people (and dog) watching spot. We’re not right on the gulf but we can hear it and see it when we head up to the club house. It has a nice looking pool and they have regular activities
I’ve biked the seawall a few times on my e-bike. I’m still getting my rear end in shape from many months of not riding but so far it’s been enjoyable. I mean a beech! Last weekend we went riding with another couple with e-bikes of their own to the North side of Galveston along some dead end roads. Lots of birds and wonderful views. Weather was fantastic.
Last Saturday we went to a “Chicken Run” held by the local Shriners. The story goes that in cajun country poor people didn’t have much so they’d go house to house to get an ingredient they could put into the gumbo pot. The last house is the farmer that has chickens and says, “You can have any chicken you want - but you gotta catch it yourself.” Hence the chicken run with multiple age groups running after and capturing a chicken. Quite hilarious. The under five year olds were adorable and the over forties way more nimble that i’d have thought. The gumbo they served was excellent. We bid on some items in the silent auction but living in an RV really puts a damper on getting things and the experience things went for way more money we intended to spend.
We also went to Galveston State Park to enjoy the beautiful scenery. We went late afternoon so not too many birds out but Lacy (our dog) enjoyed sniffing around the bayous.
The biggest surprise of the week was having brunch with a family we’ve known from Kansas City metro area for many years. Our oldest son dated their daughter for many years and we have a lot of things in common. They were on a cruise that departed and arrived in the Port of Galveston (20 minute drive from the campground) and had a few hours to burn before their flight home. It was one of those surprises that meant a lot to sit around, have some really good food, and talk about our lives.
The first week we were here I was able to get together with Brother Daryl, one of my fraternity brothers, from Illinois Institute of Technology. He lives just North of Houston and while it was a bit of a drive it was lovely getting together with him and his family. We figured it out it was thirty-eight years we met as freshmen? That can’t be right!!
The other thing that’s nice about being in this campground is we have several musician friends that are here. There’s a jam with locals that live here and whomever wants to join on Sunday afternoons and we had our jam Monday after work doing the tunes that are common among our various groups we play with. They’re trying to rope us into playing at a bar on St. Patricks day but I’d rather enjoy the festivities than play. Plus, it’ll be a work day for us so that always puts a damper on the possibilities of fun.
So all in all it’s been a fun couple of weeks. We are enjoying having friends in the area, good restaurants, things to do, and people to play music with. Let’s hope the Chiefs win, the good weather continues, and we continue to enjoy our stay in Galveston.
