We really enjoyed our time in Galveston, TX and at the Stella Mare RV Resort. The city and Island have a lot to offer being touristy but also not over the top touristy like some locations. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to visit, and things to do both nature-wise and museums and other special locations. You’re only an hour from Houston and there’s another whole set of things to do.
Weather-wise our time from mid-January through mid-March was a tale of two halves. The first half it was fairly rainy and cold (cold by southern standards) and the second half was pleasant most of the time. I really enjoyed riding the bike on the beach which goes for miles and miles. The bikes themselves didn’t care much for the salt air but that’s a maintenance issue that I’ll have to take care of
.
During our time there the Chiefs won the SuperBowl. Go Chiefs! It was fun being around folks that support the Chiefs but aren’t diehard fans mostly because Patrick Mahommes went to Texas Tech and has a house in Texas. And well, the Texans were a dumpster fire this year and Cowboys did their usual flameout in the playoffs.
In our 2 months there we had visits by our son and grandson and our daughter. With our daughter we visited the Oil Rig Museum (look, it’s sponsored by the oil and gas industry so don’t expect a lot of ecological exhibits) and NASA in Houston. At NASA we visited the Historic Mission Control, the Space Shuttle equipment simulator, and much more. One of Devyn’s robotics friends is an intern at at NASA as a 3D modeler and we had a fascinating conversation over lunch on what it’s like to work for NASA. Our son and grandson are water people so we spent a good chunk of our time either at the pool, the beach, or on a boat looking for dolphins.
In the 19 months we’ve been living full-time on the road this is the first time we’ve left a campground sad. We got to know the spouses of friends we already knew and made some new friends along the way. We will be back in the area even if it’s not in at Stella Mare. We’ll know if we’re accepted for next winter in the summer.
Next up is an RV Rally, a couple of weeks in Oklahoma City, a long weekend playing music with friends in Woodward, Oklahoma, and then Kansas City for at least a month where we will attend a couple of graduations, visit friends and family, eat some good BBQ, and maybe do some remodeling of our office.
